Does Your Bathtub Need a Makeover?

When your bathtub is worn-out and unappealing, viewing it as a place of relaxation and calm can be challenging. With a bathtub makeover, you can get rid of any cracks or staining to make your tub the little oasis it should be.

Consider a few of the different bathtub restoration options available to find the one that works best for you.

Bathtub Refinishing

Bathtub refinishing, or reglazing, is the process of applying a new finish to the surface of your tub. The process involves sanding the surface and filling in any cracks or holes. Afterward, a primer and fresh surface material — usually acrylic — in your preferred color are applied, giving the newly resurfaced tub a smooth, glossy surface.

Tub resurfacing is worth it for an improved look on a surface with minor damage. This cost-effective option gives your tub a renewed appearance while keeping its original design.

Bathtub Liners

A bathtub liner is made with PVC or acrylic sheets molded to resemble the shape of your current tub. Tub liners are placed inside your tub and adhered with sealants or special tape. Liners do not fix existing imperfections — they simply cover them up.

The process will require a technician to take measurements of the bathtub and create a mold that fits those exact specifications, after which the liner is installed over your existing tub.

While this option works well in select cases, not all bathtubs are candidates for liners. Acrylic and fiberglass bathtubs cannot be lined since the material might break or crack. Freestanding bathtubs without surrounding walls are also not suitable for liners.

Bathtub Replacement

Bathtub replacement involves completely removing and replacing your current tub with a new one. Depending on your preferences and budget, you can choose a tub made with higher-end material and style, which can significantly impact the overall look of your bathroom. Naturally, this project is more time-consuming and costly when compared to the other options.

A replacement is usually needed when the tub has signs of serious damage, such as major cracks, leaks or mold growth. However, you can also get a replacement whenever you want to give your bathroom an improved look or change your use of the available space.
